Winona Wetlands Habitat in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor, Port Townsend

The City of Port Townsend, Jefferson Land Trust, and Friends of Cappy’s Woods have launched a campaign to keep the Winona Wetlands wild by raising $100,000 over the next few months. That amount is needed to match a Conservation Futures grant recently approved by the Jefferson County Commissioners.

Funds raised by this campaign will protect approximately five acres in the Winona Basin Fowlers Park Plat. Most of these parcels are at the bottom of Cook Avenue and include 31 platted parcels and the South Reserve. Ecologists have identified this area as having the highest habitat values in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor. The properties proposed for permanent protection have wetland, buffer, and mature forest characteristics, making them a high priority for permanent protection.

JLT is working with five landowners, three of whom are interested in selling their properties. Two other landowners are willing to donate their lots as a match to the grant. The Conservation Futures grant will provide half of the cash needed for these acquisitions. JLT has some QWC funds available, but faces a shortfall of approximately $100,000. Raising the additional $100,000 for all of these priority habitat parcels will protect them forever.
