Chimacum's Glendale Farm Permanently Protected!
As of May 26, 2009, a conservation easement held by Jefferson County and Jefferson Land Trust permanently protects Glendale Farm in Chimacum.
At 180 acres Glendale Farm in Chimacum, in operation since 1857, is one of the largest single agricultural properties remaining in Jefferson County. The farm includes prime agricultural soils, over half a mile of East Chimacum Creek, and forested uplands. Now, thanks to the vision of owner Kirk Salvatore, this farm will provide food, fiber, and habitat for all future generations.
The easement protects a buffer zone for salmon and wildlife habitat along the east fork of Chimacum Creek and protects the agricultural and forestry values of the property forever. Jefferson Land Trust worked with Jefferson County and Jefferson LandWorks Collaborative partners to purchase the easement with state Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program Farmland Preservation grant funds, Jefferson County Conservation Futures funds, and community funds.
The WWRP grant includes funding for restoration of critical irrigation systems and infrastructure inprovements. Glendale Farm was the only project in Washington state to seek and receive restoration funding in the 2007–2009 state capital budget. Restoration projects will encompass maintenance of drainage ditches, improving the efficiency of the irrigation system, and installation of solar panels to provide power for pumps and other farm equipment and systems.
