$100,000 Gateway Gift for Land Protection
|
A generous couple in our community has anonymously contributed $100,000 to Jefferson Land Trust to protect portions of the remaining corridor of trees lining Highway 20 on the way into Port Townsend. In the coming months JLT will explore opportunities for acquisition along the Port Townsend entrance corridor between the western city line west and south to the intersection of Highway 19, focusing initially on those lands closest to the city boundary.
The Gateway Project began in 2003 and 2004 as a community collaboration to protect a roadside forested view buffer between Highway 20 and Discovery Way just outside the Port Townsend city limits. When county funding to purchase the three-acre parcel came up short, a public fundraising effort got underway, with donations received by Jefferson Land Trust. With heavy equipment poised to clear-cut the lot, community members responded in record numbers to help raise more than $20,000 in four weeks. Purchase of the three acres otherwise slated to be cut was completed in 2004. This most recent gift builds on that tradition of community support.
