Quimper Wildlife Corridor
In 1996 Jefferson Land Trust began an ambitious project to protect a “ribbon of green” that stretches from Middlepoint to Fort Worden State Park. Since then, in partnership with the City of Port Townsend and Jefferson County, we have protected over 175 acres in the Corridor with help from community contributions. The Corridor connects pristine wetlands with undeveloped forested areas that are the home to diverse species of wildlife, from the rough-skinned newt to the elusive wood duck, pileated woodpecker and bobcat.
Nearly 30 acres of key wetland, floodplain and forest habitat within the Cappy’s Woods / Winona Wetland area, within city limits, is still in private ownership, very close to city services, and is threatened with development.
The process of saving property in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor is ongoing in 2010, and donations to help us acquire priority property are welcome. Please be as generous as you can in support of protecting this unique "Wilderness Within" Port Townsend.
